Autumn 2025

A Word from the AACLSC President

A Chautauqua State of Mind

Every year when I arrive home in Ann Arbor, I wonder how long I can keep the Chautauqua spirit alive as I step back into my “real” life. Memories help. Music: Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, Morgan Freeman’s Delta Blues, Laufey’s unique style. Comedy Week’s much-appreciated laughter, morning speakers to stretch my mind, and of course, our authors, young and older, sharing their motivations and perspectives.

Best of all, joining Alumni at so many wonderful events. Best ever Auction and Sale, most fun Great American Picnic, Eventide lectures from around the world, biggest attendance at a book lecture on the Alumni porch, visiting at Open Houses and so much more.

I’m settling down on the patio with a cup of tea and new and old books to read, the sun is shining, the leaves are starting to turn…and I’ve still got it…the Chautauqua state of mind. Enjoy your autumn days.

Entering the Guild of Seven Seals in 2026?

If you have not yet entered the Guild of Seven Seals, there is a change coming in 2026. You must read an additional 13 CLSC selections beyond the 12 you read to graduate from the CLSC, for a total of 25 CLSC selections. In addition, you must read Chautauqua's Heart:A History of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle by Mary Lee Talbot. The Smith Memorial Library has circulating copies of this book, but you may also purchase it here or at the Chautauqua Bookstore.

Our Deepest Gratitude

The Alumni Association of the CLSC and the CLSC Class of 2000 wish to express our sincere gratitude to Ruth Nelson of the Chautauqua Wearhouse. Ruth produced and sold shirts, tote bags, and pillows featuring some of the mosaic artwork in the Hall of Philosophy. Proceeds netted a total of $2254, which she generously donated to the Tile Mosaic Restoration Project, administered by the CLSC Class of 2000.

Thanks to all who supported the project by buying shirts, pillows and tote bags and many thanks to Ruth for her support!

The Chautauqua Wearhouse in the Colonnade has an inventory of the Hall of Philosophy's Mosaic themed tees, totes and pillows by Chautauqua graphic artist Ellie Wilder. They’re beautiful, and all proceeds go to benefit the Tile Mosaic Restoration Project.

My Journey to Starting a CLSC Reading Circle in My Home Community

by Margaret K. Edwards
CLSC Class of 2015

When I heard about the challenge to start more reading circles in our home communities, I thought to myself, could I do that in Albuqueque, New Mexico, the wild, wild West? It was 2023 and I returned home from a wonderful summer at CHQ and decided to throw my energies into bringing home my love of CLSC reading to my community. Why not?

I made an appointment to meet with our library Director at my home library. I put together a packet of CLSC info and dropped it off for her ahead of our meeting. Our local branch has a variety of book groups sponsored by the branch (mystery, sci-fi, horror, fiction, history). I gave a brief presentation about CLSC and CHQ, the uniqueness of our reading circles and the opportunity of our library being a part of that history. I suggested that we set up an info session about the reading group which I was willing to present. This was scheduled and advertised. I stressed that I was willing to facilitate the book discussions, was requesting to have a conference room to meet in monthly and wanted to benefit from their monthly advertising. She was initially not inclined to support me, but I gently persisted.

The info session had 3 attendees who seemed interested. Many other calls followed as they told others and of course I contacted friends locally and associates from other organizations that I belonged to. A librarian was assigned to help me, we decided on the 4th Sunday from 2-4 pm as the meeting time and looked at the number of book copies for numerous selections that I thought might be a good start. The group was not advertised in the beginning.

We started in January 2024. I did an early survey to decide on preferences in reading, organization and meeting monthly. I stress that this was their group, I would facilitate discussions and send reminder emails. Our only requirement was that we would only read CLSC selected books.

Lessons learned and implemented:

-Advertising by the library started in 2025 increased attendance significantly to a high of 15.

-Members prefer to read books where there are adequate copies at our library. Members vote on the books that they want to read. They prefer fiction over non-fiction at this time.

-In 2025 we had a book mark made by the library with a list of books to be read that year. Books are pulled for us and held behind the reference desk for members. We also had a librarian assigned to support our group. She also keeps us on the monthly book club advertsing list.

-I do soft CLSC advertising. I offer free Chautauqua Daily newspapers, CLSC info and share updates about CHQ, CLSC and the CHQ assembly. I have shared my CLSC sash and talked about what CLSC means to me. They ask about my summer attendance.

Why is this important to me and why might you want to try to start a reading circle in your hometown? As CLSC Alumni we are continually asking ourselves how we can help and support the growth of our organization. Taking CLSC back home is a way to bring our CHQ values into our community. We have something very special to share with the world. I am happy to talk to any alumni about my journey and support your efforts. Call me at 505 377 4831 or email mkedwardsrn@yahoo.com

Kate Kimball Circle

In August, we offered a new opportunity to those participating in the Kate Kimball challenge. Participants can swap titles with each other, making it easier to find and read books from the older decades. You may have purchased a book from the 30's, 40's, 50's, etc. Now that you're finished with it, perhaps you would be willing to send it along to another alumni who needs it to complete the challenge. You must be willing to pay the shipping cost, but you might also have the opportunity to gain a free book to complete your challenge from another alumni.

If you are interested in a Kate Kimball swap club, send your email to aaclscchq@gmail.com. We will be putting the swap club together soon and sending out guidelines.

2025 & 2026 CLSC Selections!

These are the selections that were announced Saturday morning, August 16.

The CLSC Unbound Selection "This is the Only Kingdom" by Jaquira Diaz will be presented and discussed in an on-line format on November 20, 2025. The Literary Arts Department is stretching its boundaries, offering book discussions outside of our traditional Chautauqua season. This book, though outside of the typical nine-week season, will still count as a CLSC selection for your book lists.

The other two books - "Bog Queen" by Anna North and "Feeding Ghosts" by Tessa Hulls - will be presented and discussed next summer during the 2026 season.

You can view pictures and some of the fun on our Facebook page.

Happy Reading!
