Eventide: Restoring the Historic Tile Mosaics

Description

When the CLSC Class of 2000 graduated, they took on a class project that has become a legacy. They have diligently worked at restoring and saving the tile mosaics in the floor of the Hall of Philosophy. Beginning with the Pioneer Class who graduated in 1882, successive classes added mosaics displaying their class symbol or flower until they ran out of space. Over the years, between weather and millions of footsteps trodding on them, many of the mosaics had fallen into serious disrepair, becoming not only unsightly, but a tripping hazard.

Artist Denise Williams, who owns Living Glass in nearby Westfield, was retained to complete the repair work on these historic mosaics. She and her team have searched far and wide for matching tiles and worked extremely carefully to replicate the mosaics exactly as they once were.

Karen Paul, a member of the Class of 2000, has spearheaded this restoration project. Karen will be speaking about all that's been done and all that still needs to be done as the restoration project goes forward.
